Five Minutes with Sarah Bond

In this new segment on AtMayfair Diaries, we feature founders, designers and artists who have helped shape cult fashion brands. Taking only five minutes with these visionaries, we ask them about their design inspiration, their favourite bloggers and how they like to unwind.

Q. What sparked your interest in fashion?
I would attribute my interest to two events.
The day I slipped into one of my mother’s extensive selection of high heeled shoes, dabbed on some lipstick and placed a strand of pearls around my neck. I was about 5 years old.
I didn’t realise however just how deep my interest was until age 11, when I watched my first episode of CNN’s Style with Elsa Klensch. That was it. I was hooked from the word go.
The show gave me a platform to be inspired, learn about all these wonderful designers and dream about setting up my own label one day.

2. Define “Fashion’ in your own words.
Fashion is an exercise in elevating the spirit and expressing one’s personality. It is ever changing, reflecting society’s current mood and state of mind.

3. What sets your label apart?
I am obsessed with flattering cuts. If my piece does not accentuate the best parts of a woman’s body, then I am not interested in sharing it with the world. Fit and freedom in movement are an essential part of the Sarah Bond DNA.
High standards in product quality are also important, which is why I chose to produce in the UK. It allows me to oversee production at every stage and maintain quality control. I know every pattern cutter and seamstress that works on my pieces and that is something I am proud of.

4. Would you ever consider designing menswear?
Yes. I keep getting asked about this. I already design pieces for my husband and he always gets positive comments. So it is definitely on my to-do list.

5. How important is Fashion Week for you?
It’s important in the sense of seeing so many designers’ work within a compressed period of time and focusing people’s minds on the creative element of our industry. I love the excitement that comes with it.

6. Name three top things in your styling kit that are must-haves.
A great pair of sunglasses, a fabulous statement coat and scarf. The ultimate goal is to be chic whilst still maintaining your personality.

7. What synergies do you see between and Sarah Bond that led you to join hands with
I liked the team. AtMayfair team is very enthusiastic and proactively work with brands to ensure that their customer base get to know each label. This is important for emerging brands who are seeking to share their vision with the world.

It’s essential to work with companies that have the drive to succeed.

8. What advice would you give to people aspiring to work in the fashion industry?
Be tenacious, fearless, focused and prepared to work very hard to achieve your goals.

9. How do you unplug from work?
I practice yoga, paint and spend time with friends and loved ones. I also like to change locations. Travel puts you in a reflective mood and allows you to day dream, which to me, is important for nourishing one’s soul.

10. How do you stay updated on the current trends?
I read the industry journals. But to be honest, trends don’t interest me. I design for the long game, making sure that every item maintains design relevance for years to come. Luxury items should never be discarded, they should be treasured and worn over and over again.
